I was reading one of my favorite book "On Target Living" and section about lifestyle struck me and made me think about the importance of lifestyle, exercise and food habits. Most of us too concentrated on money making and occupied with business forgetting the most important part the self. I would like to share the fact in the following passages.

In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic and hired the best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably longer and healthier lives. In these “Blue Zones,” they found that people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States. The five regions identified and discussed by Buettner in his 2008 book Blue Zones, published by National Geographic:
  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Sardinia, Italy
  • Loma Linda, California
  • Nicoya, Costa Rica
  • Ikaria, Greece
After identifying the world's Blue Zones, Buettner and his team of scientists went to each location to identify lifestyle characteristics that might explain this health and longevity phenomenon. They found that the lifestyles of residents in the Blue Zones shared multiple specific characteristics:
  • Happy—Most of these people are happy. If you are grumpy, things aren't looking good!
  • Family—Focus on family.
  • Plant-based diet—Meat is more of a condiment than a staple. Eating legumes was also a common staple in these groups.
  • No smoking—I don't think the Marlboro Man lived in a Blue Zone.
  • Active lifestyles—Daily moderate physical activity. These people are moving their bodies daily!
  • Low stress—Pace of life is more relaxed and balanced.
  • Eat to 80 percent full—Stop meals when you are 80 percent full. No “Supersize Me” for this crowd!
  • Wine—Moderate drinking has some positive benefits. This is going to make many people happy! Maybe wine drinking makes people happy?
  • Sense of purpose and belonging.
