Latvian lat - national currency of the Republic of Latvia, on Latvian - Lats, a Ls symbol. Code in the international ISO 4217 standard — LVL. One armor it is equal to 100 centimes. In a turn there are coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 centimes and in 1 and 2 lats, banknotes — 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lats. For today the lat is the only thing official, means of payment in all outlets of Latvia. Within the country freely to exchange any foreign currency for lats and back, it is possible in all offices of the Latvian banks (work in the working days with 9:00 till 17:00, some offices work and on the days off) and special exchange offices - Valutas Maina (work and on the days off, some round the clock) which are located in all crowded places of the city.

All outlets in Latvia accept cash armor, also in the majority of places, including shops, restaurants, cafe, gas stations, hotels and so on, it is possible to pay off with the help of cash cards (exceptions can make the markets, the few small little shops and booths). Both in Riga, and across all Latvia the network of ATMs is widespread. For payments by popularity Internet banking uses.

The lat is hard currency - outside Latvia armor also is accepted to an exchange in the majority of banks.

Besides usual coins the Bank of Latvia regularly lets out anniversary and memorable coins devoted to people, the cities, events. For the first time in the history of the country anniversary coins of 2, 10 and 100 lats were let out in November, 1993 in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia. And since 2001 twice a year also there are usual one-LVL coins with unusual registration.
