Coins, cash or debit cards are payment methods these days, but skepticism against the EURO and US Dollar makes alternatives more popular. So, what about ... beaver pelts?

In previous centuries, beaver fur was a payment methods in North America and Canada. Formerly the beaver was the "king of fur-bearing animals". Until the mid-20th century the beaver was even used as the main payment method in North America.

  • 2.25 kg of sugar ...... 1 beaver pelt
  • 1 gun ...................... 12 beaver pelts
  • 2 scissors ................. 1 beaver pelt

All goods traded with Indians oriented on the value of a beaver pelt. So, the beaver was the main object of the fur trade. In the 17th and 18th century, the Hudson's Bay Company, which has named its trading house in London "The Beaver House" based its exchange rates on beaver pelts. There was not an exchange rate for beaver pelts only.

Later beaver coins as payment were introduced. Maybe we can exchange some pelts here on DUKASCOPY, sooner or later? We might trade then ... BEAVER vs. WOLF (BEA/WLF) or MOOSE vs. DEER (MOO/DEE) or OTTER vs. FOX (OTT/FOX) ... Wouldn't that be fun?!
